He was aged 48 in 1942. They had one son Noel Charles (1913-1964).<\/p>\n<p>Eva died on 22 April 1945 at <a href=\"https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/?page_id=380\">Belalau<\/a>. (Jessie Simons in \u2018While History Passed\u2019 mistakenly says she died at Muntok). After the liberation of the\u00a0surviving civilian\u00a0captives at Belalau, the Dutch re-interred the bodies of those who had died there in various cemeteries across Indonesia. Among those who were moved was Eva, whose body was reinterred at Kalibanteng at Semarang on the island of Java. Her grave can be viewed\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.6471;\" href=\"https:\/\/oorlogsgravenstichting.nl\/persoon\/98402\/eveline-b-madden-mac-cabe\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her parents were Peter McCabe &amp; Harriet Teresa Thynne. They were both born in Ireland, but Eva was born in Crowthorne, Berkshire, England, where her father taught gymnastics at Wellington College.<\/p>\n<p>A memorial stone has been found in the graveyard of\u00a0<a style=\"line-height: 1.6471;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=cr&amp;GRid=57591292&amp;CRid=2337560&amp;\">All Saints Church Cemetery<\/a>, Taiping,\u00a0Perak:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Butler-Madden-Grave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1397 \" src=\"https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Butler-Madden-Grave-1024x750.jpg\" alt=\"Butler Madden Grave\" width=\"476\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Butler-Madden-Grave-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Butler-Madden-Grave-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/muntokpeacemuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Butler-Madden-Grave.jpg 1209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the left it reads: In Memory of Louis John Butler-Madden of Taiping Perak who was killed by the sinking of the SS \u201cVyner Brooke\u201d in the Banka Straits on 14th February 1942. He endeavored to do his Duty.\u00a0May his Soul Rest in Peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On the right it reads: In Memory of Evelyn Frances Butler-Madden.\u00a0His wife who died in the Women&#8217;s Internment camp, Sumatra on 22nd April 1945 After much suffering courageously borne.\u00a0A help and an example to her companions in distress.\u00a0May Her Soul Rest in Peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In her book &#8216;<em>While History Passed<\/em>&#8216; Jessie Simons writes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;.\u00a0Rumours and speculations had a great run at times [of stress]. One of the most persistent rumour-starters was a charming elderly lady who had lived in India [actually Malaya] nearly all her life. Although she managed to adjust herself amazingly well, she used to exasperate us with the most romantic tales of rescue. I think the best was in 1944 when she said, &#8220;The Japanese are either going to exchange us or send us to the hills &#8212; they know European women can&#8217;t stand a continuous life in the tropics.&#8221; I knew her well and really think she meant it.
